Babel | Titus O'Bryant

 • Titus O'Bryant • Series: In the Beginning

In the story of beginnings from Genesis, we see humanity moving away from God in rebellion while God keeps moving closer in his grace toward humanity. To conclude this series, we find God bringing judgment to scatter people as a result of their pride. However, even in judgment God is acting graciously to create a good ending for the human story. How can we trust God with the broken parts of our lives and move away from pride to depend on him? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Read Genesis 11:1-9. What are some reasons that people would want to build a city and live in close proximity in the world of Genesis? 2. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 3. What might God’s response to the city, tower, and efforts of the people of Babylonia tell us about their building projects and motivation? 4. How can pride be a reasonable self-respect but expand into conceit or arrogance? How can we perceive the difference? How have you experienced the reasonable benefits of a healthy self-respect but also the brokenness that comes from excessive pride? 5. How does God’s judgment in Genesis 11 ultimately demonstrate his grace and produce good for humanity when we consider the rest of story of Genesis (see Genesis 11:27-32 for a preview), the story of the Scriptures, and human history? 6. How could you trust God with the broken parts of your life, depend on his grace, and move away from unhealthy pride?
