Following the Clues from Suffering | Titus O'Bryant
• Titus O'Bryant • Series: The Gospel of Job
Job asked repeatedly for an audience with God and finally he seems to receive exactly what he wanted…or does he? God seems to leave many of Job’s (and our) questions about suffering unanswered. Instead of revealing answers, God reveals himself to Job. At the conclusion of Job’s story, we receive a new view on who God is and what he expects of us. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Read Job 42:1-17 where Job responds to God’s revealing of himself and Job’s story concludes. If possible, read chapters 38-41 to get a sense of God’s amazing power through his speech to Job. How would you summarize the message from God to Job in chapters 38-41? What do these chapters reveal about the person of God and his character? 2. How has Job changed and developed and how is his perspective, words, and tone different in chapter 42 than the rest of the book? What caused this change? 3. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 4. What questions do you have about trouble and pain or about the story of Job? How has your view of pain and suffering changed through studying the book and story of Job? 5. Is there someone experiencing a challenge who you could introduce to Jesus? Do you know someone who is following Jesus but suffering? How could you reach out to those individuals to help them meet Jesus or to help them meet their challenges faithfully? 6. Have you ever thanked God for the troubles you have faced of events you would consider unfortunate? How could you thank him for those parts of life right now? Consider writing a note of gratitude to God or offering a prayer of thanks for some of the difficult parts of your life.
