Chasing Dreams and Clinging to God | Titus O'Bryant
• Titus O'Bryant • Series: Jacob: Wrestling with God
Have you ever struggled with the feeling that your life is driven by people and forces beyond your control? When I read the stories of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel—I imagine they must have felt that same way. This weekend we want to remember significant truths to help us remain centered even when we feel life spinning beyond our control. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Read Genesis 29:31-30:24, and if you can, the longer section of Genesis 29:31-31:55. How do the distinct parts of this narrative fit together? a. Jacob’s wives and children in 29:31-30:24 b. Jacob’s employment with Laban and prosperity in 30:25-30:43 c. Jacob’s decision to return to his homeland in 31:1-21 d. Jacob’s confrontation and treaty with Laban in 31:22-31:55 e. What is one key message you take away from each part of this narrative? 2. In these stories…How did Laban try to control Jacob? How did Rachel and Leah try to control Jacob? How did Jacob try to control his life situations? 3. How could you define the difference between desiring unhealthy control of others or of life and wise living or prudent boundaries? 4. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 5. Leah felt overlooked because Jacob’s heart did not belong to her (29:31) and Rachel felt overlooked because Jacob didn’t provide her with children (30:1). How did both women respond to this disappointment? When you feel overlooked, not chosen, or disadvantaged how have you responded? 6. Is there a part of your life that feels out-of-control for you right now? What do you think God may be doing in your life and what might God be calling you toward?
