On the Road with Jesus

 • Titus O'Bryant • Series: Mark's Gospel: The Way to Expand Influence

Sometimes we look for a significant life in all the wrong places—our achievement, our comfort, our status, our unassailable strength. Whenever our search for meaning and for the good life begins with ourselves, we are looking in the wrong place. Jesus repeatedly teaches that a life full of purpose begins with others rather than ourselves and that a Jesus-following life is a Jesus-serving life. This weekend we remember what serving Jesus looks like from his teaching in Mark 10. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Read Jesus’ teaching about service from Mark 10:35-45 then digest the surrounding narratives through Jesus’ teaching about marriage (10:1-12), faith (10:13-31), predicting his suffering and victory (32-34), and healing the blind man (10:46-52). 2. How did Jesus characterize following him through service in verses 42-45? What lesson or message might Jesus have been communicating to his disciples through the episodes surrounding his teaching about service: a. Marriage and divorce (10:1-12) b. Faith like a child (10:13-16) c. The rich man’s lack of faith (10:17-31) d. Jesus’ sacrifice and disciples’ request (10:32-34) e. Healing Bartimaeus (10:46-52) 3. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 4. Sometimes, is it difficult to remember that your service for others grows out of gratitude for God’s grace (unearned gifts) and is not a way for you to perform or earn your standing with God or force him to give you something you desire? What might make it difficult for us to live and serve like this? 5. Throughout this series and this study in Mark, what have you remembered or learned and how might Jesus be guiding you to expand your influence? 6. How might Jesus be calling you to serve him right now? Are you experiencing a challenge or pain where you simply need to keep believing? Is there a relationship you can invest in to influence someone else toward Jesus? Have you been entrusted with money or resources you could give away to Jesus’ kingdom?
