Grace Saves You | Titus O'Bryant
• Titus O'Bryant • Series: Grace: Beyond Amazing
When you read or hear the words, “undeserved privilege,” what do you reflexively think or feel? We’ve been trained to not only earn our own way through life but to resent those who have some type of standing or gift that we don’t have. However, anything that I’ve earned or deserve, I am always in danger of losing if I become undeserving, make terrible choices, or even become victimized. This weekend, we consider the undeserved privilege that Jesus makes possible, and we celebrate the new life Jesus is creating at LifePoint through baptisms. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Read Romans 5:1-11 where our salvation and undeserved privilege in Jesus is described. How many different gifts from God to us because of Jesus’ sacrifice can you identify in these verses? 2. Pay attention to the past, present, and future aspects of what Jesus gives us and has done for us in salvation. What has happened in the past, what do we experience now, and what can we confidently anticipate in the future from Romans 5:1-11? Consider using a unique highlighter color for each of the categories or make a list with three headings of past, present, and future. 3. In verse 2, how do we receive undeserved privilege from Jesus? 4. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 5. 2 Samuel 9:1-13 records a simple story of undeserved privilege. Mephibosheth had done nothing to earn David’s favor (other than being born). Imagine what it might have been like for Mephibosheth to hear that King David (a man his grandfather tried to kill) called for him, to receive unexpected kindness and wealth from David, and to begin life as a member of the king’s household. How could Mephibosheth’s experience with David be similar to your experience with God? 6. When have you received undeserved privilege—gifts you didn’t earn, could never deserve, and will never be able to pay back? Create a quiet moment to make a list of some of the most significant undeserved gifts and privileges in your life. Allow those moments to fill your soul, notice what you feel and think about, and spend some time thanking God for your undeserved privilege. 7. Would you pray for those who are being baptized and are near the beginning of their new life with Jesus at LifePoint that they would grow stronger in their faith, discover their identity in Jesus, and always experience God’s grace.
