Your Heart Matters Most

 • Titus O'Bryant • Series: Mark's Gospel: The Way to Expand Influence

Our heart represents the essence of who we are and the core of our character. Other people only see the parts of our heart that we reveal, but God sees our heart in its entirety. Jesus worked to change the hearts of his first followers and calls us into the same transformative process. He skips over the external parts of our lives and focuses directly on what is most important—our heart. Together, let’s align our hearts to follow Jesus. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Read Jesus’ interaction with the Gentile woman in Mark 7:24-30 as well as Jesus’ teaching about the heart preceding this story in Mark 7:1-23. What is the connection between these parts of chapter 7? 2. Pay attention to Jesus’ criticism in verses 6-9. What are some ways people might use traditions or preferences to push aside God’s commands in order to justify themselves? 3. How does Jesus’ focus on the heart in verses 14-23 shift our focus from external conformity to internal character and reality? What would have been challenging to Jesus’ disciples about this teaching and what is challenging for you? 4. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 5. In Jesus’ conversation with a mother in verses 24-30, how do the personal characteristics and the careful choice of words from the woman demonstrate her unique faith? 6. How does this chapter contribute to a picture of the nature of a heart that Jesus wants to develop in us? 7. Do you know someone who might feel excluded, unworthy, or fearful that you could reach out in some way to show the love and heart of Jesus? How could you do that?
