Faith Meets Failure and Faithfulness | Titus O'Bryant
• Titus O'Bryant • Series: Abraham & Sarah: A Journey of Faith
Christianity diverges from all other faith traditions by emphasizing God’s actions for us rather than our work for God, and Abraham’s story is the beginning of that change. This weekend Abram and Sarai show us beautiful faith that is far from perfect, and we learn the essential dynamics of relationship with God. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Read Genesis 15:1-8, and if you can the two follow-up episodes from Abram and Sarai’s life in Genesis 15:7-21 and Genesis 16:1-16. 2. How does Abram express his doubts in Genesis 15:1-8? How does he express his faith that God rewards in verse 6? 3. What did you hear this weekend that inspired you, challenged you, or sparked disagreement or further consideration? 4. Abram doubted God would keep his promise to give him a son and suggested a servant become his heir (15:1-6), he questioned the promise of receiving land but God confirmed the promise by affirming his covenant by himself (15:7-21), along with Sarai he schemed to acquire a son by manipulating Hagar (16:1-16)—yet God honored his faith with not only forgiveness but “righteousness.” How has your faith been weak and faltering or “not good enough?” How does this narrative inform your perspective about the faith that God is looking for and rewards? 5. Personalize the promise of Genesis 15:1. What does it look like for you to believe in God as your shield and protector who promises great reward? 6. Trusting in what God has done rather than what we do is life-changing because it brings us not only forgiveness but freedom. Who could you pray to receive the gift of eternal life by trusting Jesus? Is there another action you could take to help introduce them to Jesus?
