Jesus Didn't Keep Score

 • Titus O'Bryant • Series: Leading from the High Road

Scorekeeping is necessary for sports and games but can be deadly for relationships. When we compare ourselves with others, measure our performance or efforts against someone else, or manipulate others by our gifts and service—we create cycles of hurt and brokenness. When we follow Jesus to avoid keeping score in our relationships we step into freedom for ourselves and lead others to freedom. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Read 1 Peter 2:21-25. How did Peter describe the example of Jesus? What characteristics of Jesus can you identify from this passage? 2. Read Jesus’ interaction with Peter and storytelling from Matthew 18:21-35. How would you summarize the point of Jesus’ story? 3. Recall moments in your life when you have been deeply hurt. Can you trace any actions of defensiveness or attitudes of bitterness, anger, pervasive negativity, or hostility back to that woundedness? 4. What makes forgiveness so difficult at times? How is trusting God to carry out justice connected with forgiving a deep wound? 5. How does forgiveness create freedom for yourself as well as others? How is forgiveness distinct from reconciliation a relationship? When might it wise or right to forgive but not to reconcile? 6. Who or what wound do you need to own and forgive? Who do you need to ask forgiveness? What is your next step toward freedom?
