Our Father in Heaven | Titus O'Bryant

 • Titus O'Bryant • Series: The Lord's Prayer

What is one thing you would like to change in yourself or in our world? A little bit of change would probably do us all some good, but change can be difficult. Jesus really does change everything, and the way he taught his disciples to create change is a little surprising—it was through prayer. Making this prayer part of your practice can change this world and just might change your life too. Let's take our first step into the Lord's Prayer together. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Our relationship (positive, negative, mixed, or non-existent) with our fathers on earth influences our idea of our Father in heaven. How has your dad or father figure(s) influenced your perspective about God? 2. Pause and consider what it means that God is your Father in heaven—what thoughts, images, aspirations, or desires comes to your mind. 3. Transcendence is the characteristic of God’s nature that indicates he is greater than, different than, and so far above us we can not fully grasp him. Immanence describes the characteristic of God that he is connected with us, like us, able to be known and touched by us. Which of these characteristics do you focus on more in your relationship with God? How can holding onto both of these qualities ground our relationship with God? 4. What might it look like for you to direct your attention to exalting, setting apart, or “making holy” God’s name in your life? Are there concrete ways you could shift away from exalting your name and live for the glory of God’s name? 5. We talked about five actions we can take in relationship with God, because of who God is and what he has done. Which action might the Lord be calling you toward and what concrete steps could you take in that direction? (Trust, Fear, Love, Reflect, Talk) 6. How can you incorporate the Lord’s Prayer into your daily life this week? You could pray the words of the prayer, identify the major themes and write or speak your own prayer, or you could focus on one part of the prayer and quietly wait in the presence of the Lord.
